The Lookout Mountain Group (LMG), a non-partisan organization examining the effect of proposed health insurance reforms on college student health care, released a press statement criticizing current health reform proposals.
 
The statement accused current proposals of not explicitly stating that “the definition of ‘group Insurance’ will include college and university sponsored student health insurance/benefit plans” or clearly providing measures for colleges and universities to “continue to collect health fees or allocate a portion of tuition in order to fund college health programs.”
 
“Uninsured college students constitute one of the single largest, cohesive groups of uninsured Americans,” reads LMG’s position paper.

The group’s spokesman Jim Mitchell said that student health insurance/benefit plans (SHIBP’s) currently in place at many colleges and universities across the country provide good health coverage with low cost and no risk of exclusion because of pre-existing conditions.
 
The group calls for changes to these existing plans brought by new health reform initiatives to be carefully studied and scrutinized.
