Hampshire Divestment Causes Controversy

Hampshire College recently divested from a State Street Global Advisors mutual fund, drawing both praise and criticism from students, alumni, and other individuals who claim the decision was made because of pro-Palestinian political motives. Hampshire’s Board of Trustees made the decision to divest after a student-led group, Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), petitioned for divestment and received over 800 signatures from students, staff and alumni. The group expressed particular concern about a controversial mutual fund that supported companies that provide aid to the Israeli Military, including Caterpillar, United Technologies, General Electric and ITT Corporation. The college, however, denies that the financial move had political motives, stating that the board based its decision on the results a KLD Research and Analysis screening for socially responsible investment. KLD’s report concluded that over 200 companies had violated their investment standards, including the four companies that Students for Justice in Palestine singled out.
Despite Hampshire’s official statement that the divestment was unrelated to the current conflict in the Middle East, SJP members claimed victory. "Whether they want to admit to it or not, the board made the decision because of SJP,” said SJP member Dina Jacir. The group sent out a press release praising the college’s decision and stating "by divesting from these companies, SJP believes that Hampshire has distanced itself from complicity in the illegal occupation and war crimes of Israel." This assertion has sparked controversy with a number of pro-Israeli figures, including Alan Dershowitz, author of The Case for Israel, whose son attended Hampshire College. In a Huffington Post editorial, Dershowitz wrote that he would no longer be making donations to his son’s alma mater and urged others to take similar action.
