Harvard Students Protest University's Elimination of Anonymous HIV Testing
More than 20 students gathered in front of the Holyoke Center Wednesday evening to protest Harvard University Health Services’ decision to discontinue anonymous HIV testing for students August 1. UHS Director, David S. Rosenthal says that students did not utilize anonymous testing and that HIV testing no longer carries a stigma, eliminating the need for anonymous testing. Starting next year, Harvard students who undergo the test will receive testing confidentially but will have their test results included in their medical records.
Students and faculty are protesting and criticizing UHS for making the decision in an undercover process. Protesters also stressed that this decision would cause people to avoid being tested or else simply resort to other testing facilities in the Boston Area.
