Hate Speech vs. Free Speech: A Slippery Slope

Date: 12/11/2008 3:05 pm

Last week hundreds of students gathered at the University Washington’s HUB to protest “hate and homophobia” in their campus newspaper. The UW student newspaper, The Daily, ran a point-counter point column about gay marriage. Columnist John Fay argued against gay marriage using the slippery slope argument that once marriage between homosexuals is legalized it is only a matter of time before legalized bestiality. The column was accompanied by an illustration portraying a man and a sheep. The Graduate and Professional Student Senate passed a resolution demanding an apology or resignation from the editorial board. Editor in chief Sarah Jeglum wrote a column in response to the outpour, stating she has no intention to apologize. “Free speech is for everyone,” she wrote, “It’s not just for the majority, and it’s not just for the minority. It’s not just for people you agree with, and it’s not just for people you disagree with.”
