Homeless Lecture Students
Helene Kahn, a member of Hillel's Tzedek and Social Action Committee, brought former homeless individuals to speak about their experiences to Syracuse University students through The National Coalition for the Homeless. The quality and number of homeless shelters were addressed, as well as who the speakers are and where they come from. To the surprise of some students, there were several homeless college graduates. One of the speakers was featured in the movie series “Bumfights”; he spoke against the films because he believes the producers took advantage of his alcoholism and because he fears the series has sparked more acts of violence against homeless people. Following the event, audience members helped pack toiletries for the Syracuse Rescue Mission.
