Students from Washington University in St. Louis will be traveling to the African nation of Madagascar this spring break, working to promote environmental conservation by introducing workable business models to rural basket weavers. Organizers hope the added income will help dissuade local populations from further deforestation of the land, a common problem throughout many parts of Africa. The students are part of a joint project of the Missouri Botanical Garden (MOBOT) and the national not-for-profit the Blessing Basket Project.
