Hunger Strike for North Koreans

Date: 11/17/2008 05:28 pm

Binghamton University’s chapter of Liberty in North Korea (LiNK) has begun a hunger strike to raise awareness of the plight of North Koreans. The students will live off of 250 grams of rice and a multi-vitamin each day for 10 days, in the hopes of raising awareness of the “Shenyang Six,” a group of North Korean refugees (two orphan boys and four women) who are currently imprisoned in Shenyang, China. Protesters believe the imprisonment of the six violates the international convention regarding the status of refugees. In addition to the “Shenyang Six,” LiNK works to expose the conditions of torture, sex trafficking, malnutrition, sexual exploitation and starvation widely believed to exist within the extremely secretive nation. LiNK has also created programs to shelter North Korean orphans, and women who have been trafficked in the sex trade.
