Increased Fees Could Decrease Enrollment at the University of California

Date: 11/06/2009 01:25 pm

Next fall, a possible 32 percent increase in fees and fewer open spots for new freshman may reduce enrollment for the University of California.

The University of California Board Of Regents is expected to vote on the 32 percent increase in fees at next month’s meeting, and some high school students are preparing for the worst.

“The fee hike doesn't make me want to apply for UCs," said Kyle Filippelli, a junior at Berkeley High School.

But Berkeley High college advisor Angela Price said she feels the university probably won’t see an effect until after admissions decisions are released next year.

"I don't think it will affect the application part," Price said. "What it will come down to is UC admission numbers and if they can admit as many as they have in the past."

University of California spokesperson Ricardo Vazquez said the Board of Regents was forced to curtail freshman enrollment by 2,300 students in fall 2009. The policy will likely be continued in fall 2010, Vazquez said.

"The regents are considering something very similar," Vazquez said. "They will again look at and vote on reducing freshman enrollment by about the same number of students but increasing community college transfer student numbers."
