International Students Protest, Commit Suicide to Show Solidarity with the Tamils of Sri Lanka
Students in the southern Indian region of Tamil Nadu attempted suicide in protest of Sri Lanka’s military action against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a militant secessionist group in northern Sri Lanka. After a handful of non-student youth committed suicide in solidarity with the LTTE over the past week, three students in Themi attempted to follow suit by eating toxic seeds on Tuesday. The students were rushed to the hospital, and were listed in serious condition. As a result of the student unrest, the Tamil Nadu government ordered the indefinite closure of all universities and student hostels in the region on Sunday. The Sri Lankan Tamil Protection Front, a collection of various political groups in support of the LTTE, organized a protest in Chennai for Wednesday. “Despite the Colleges and hostels having been closed,” said Mr. R. Thirumalai, State Secretary of the All India Students Federation, “the students, particularly the Law College students who are in the forefront, are very resistive and defiant.” Nine students in Sydney, Australia are engaging in a hunger strike demanding the Australian government take action in support of the Tigers. Hundreds of students from the University of Toronto in Canada gathered outside of the Sri Lankan consulate last week in response to the Sri Lankan army’s attacks against the tigers.
