IUP Students Send Shoes to Haitian Children

Student organizers at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania began a “Shoes for Haiti” campaign to provide Haitian schoolchildren aged 7 to 18 with much-needed shoes that will be delivered April 15, 2010.
The program, sponsored by Partners in Progress for Haiti, is “helping the organized poor in Haiti to help themselves to overcome lifetimes of misery, chronic scarcity of resources, [and] decades of environmental degradation through self reliance, grassroots democracy and communal organization.”
Over 85 IUP students attended the first project meeting and will soon place collection boxes, fliers, and contact information throughout the campus. Shoes of any size can be dropped in the collection boxes around campus as long as they are in relatively good condition.
Lead coordinators Ron Rethi, Gina Lemmon, April Ratner, all junior English majors, and junior nursing major Rhema Lewis will organize donation sites and direct people to them.
English professor Rosalee Stilwell, one of the original organizers of the program, said, “[The faculty] felt that once IUP students were aware of [Haitian] children and their desire to go to school, that it would be easy to get our students involved in this project”.
