Four former Louisiana governors met with the current Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal to urge him to reduce planned cuts in funding for state schools. Though he offered no specifics, Jindal emerged from the meeting pledging to keep the cuts to less than 10 percent. Jindal had initially planned to cut $220 million from the higher education budget next year in order to balance the budget. Those cuts have been opposed by legislators, business leaders and students in addition to the four former governors.
Already, the Senate has revised the budget for next year in a proposal that reduces cuts to $109 million. Senate Bills 1 and 2 could help ease the burden on education and health care by making it easier for the state to dip into dedicated funds—freeing up more money than current law allows.
