Kicking Butts

The Residence Hall Association at Louisiana State teamed up with student group Gays, Bisexuals, Lesbians and Supporters United to work on a campaign called Kick the Butt.  The campaign is an effort to clean up cigarette butts on campus and is organized by Cigarettelitter.org, a nonprofit organization that runs educational programs to reduce cigarette litter. Students spent a day cleaning up cigarette butts across campus, and then made signs publicizing how much trash they collected. The campaign was intended not only to clean up the campus, but also to raise awareness about the sheer mass of cigarette litter, particularly for the gay and lesbian communities which tend to have higher smoking rates than the general population. Students said many people don’t consider cigarette butts as trash despite the fact that it can take anywhere from 18 months to 10 years for a cigarette filter to decompose.
