After New Jersey Governor Jon S. Corzine proposed $38 million in budget cuts to Rutgers University in the upcoming year, students and citizens alike have grown increasingly concerned about the future of higher education in New Jersey. The state Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee held its first public hearing this week at a packed Rutgers Student Center. Rutgers University Student Assembly chair Jim Kline testified that the loss of state aid for higher education has resulted in the cutting of academic programs and has placed higher education affordability in jeopardy. Kline has also begun working with the presidents of other public student governments and student leaders at schools throughout the state to organize on behalf of students.
