Know Your Rights!

Date: 11/17/2008 05:28 pm

This brilliant article from Northeastern covers an
oft-neglected aspect of campus life: students’ Fourth Amendment rights. Many
court cases involving students caught with the Mary Jane (tut-tut) have been
dismissed due to the failure of police of resident life staff to obtain a
warrant before conducting a search. According to the article, while “colleges
may reserve the right to enter the rooms of students for inspection purposes,
such a regulation cannot be interpreted as having consent to search for
evidence for the primary purpose of criminal prosecution.”
