L.A. Community Colleges Going Green
Thanks to voter-approved bonds, the Los Angeles Community College District is able to move forward with $5.7 billion worth of green building projects despite cuts in other areas of their budget. The district’s plans involve renovating buildings to be more energy efficient and using more alternative energy—goals that students across the country have pushed for in recent years. The Board of Trustees approved a policy in 2002 that requires all buildings that are funded at least half by bonds meet the standards for the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED certification. The Board of Trustees also approved a separate district-wide policy that requires 10 percent of the energy for new construction projects be renewable energy such as solar power. The green building initiative plan calls for 90 LEED certified buildings, 37 of which are either completed or under construction.
