Less Aid for Indiana Students

Date: 7/28/2009 4:19 pm

Despite an increase in state funding for financial aid, much larger increases in financial aid applications mean students in Indiana will see smaller grants this year.  Due largely to the recession, the number of students applying for state financial aid has risen 34 percent while state funding has increased by only 6 percent. That means that students will ultimately see decreases in their aid awards by as much as $3,000.  While some schools are unsure about how to deal with decreased budget, some, like Indiana Tech, are taking immediate action. At Tech the school has decided pay the difference of what the state is offering and what the student can afford by increasing institution-funded scholarships and dipping further into the school’s endowment.

At the same time students’ aid packages are set to decrease, many institutions are also increasing tuition.  For example, Purdue University both increased tuition by five percent and added $500 in additional fees.
