With polls showing Barack Obama secure in a double-digit lead over John McCain amongst college-age voters, college Republicans are feeling a bit lonely. NYU’s Washington Square Times likened McCain supporters on their campus to needles in a haystack. Prior to his candidacy, McCain mustered a certain level of youth popularity with his “straight talk” and apolitical antics, such as making frequent appearances on the Daily Show. Yet his campaign never officially sanctioned a student group, though other demographic-specific supporters such as “Bikers for McCain” and “Asians-Americans for McCain” were acknowledged on the campaign web site. With unprecedented youth registration and a huge anticipated turnout in this year’s election, a candidate’s ability to relate to college-age voters may prove vital.
