Miami of Ohio Offers Grants to Student Activists

Date: 10/08/2009 05:24 pm

In an effort to increase civic engagement, Miami University of Ohio now offers grants for students’ social awareness projects of up to $1,000.

The grants are funded by the University’s Parents’ Fund as part of a plan to engage students in social action through the university’s Office of Community Engagement and Service (OCES). The office promotes students taking interest in their communities in order to encourage social thinking outside of the university. In addition to the grants from Parents' Fund, students will also be able to receive financial backing from the Western Inquiry Center for organizing trips and events.

Students at Miami University recently used some of the funds to take part in the Sept. 25 Group of 20 (G-20) Conference in Pittsburgh, but there is still a lot of the money left unused.

A recent editorial in the student-run paper “The Miami Student” urged students to use the funds.

“The editorial board of The Miami Student hopes these funding options will encourage students to get involved in…important social and political issues,” it read.

“Learning how to take steps to make a difference is something that can't be taught in the classroom, and it is important for students to find the issues about which they feel passion.”
