On June 23, about 40 students and faculty at Miami-Dade Honors College held a protest to raise support for the Dream Act and oppose the deportation of 23-year-old college student Walter Lara. The Dream Act, co-sponsored by Florida Senators Nelson and Martinez among others would grant certain immigrants who graduate from U.S. high schools conditional permanent residency—allowing them to stay in the U.S. for college. Protestors and Sen. Nelson argue that the Dream Act should be passed to help students like Lara. Lara – who moved from Argentina to Miami when he was 3 years old and graduated with high scores in high school in college – was arrested in February by immigration officials.
