Miami Students “Stand Up” Against Poverty

Date: 10/15/2009 02:20 pm

On October 14th, student organizers from igKnite, the student organization of the Knight Center for International Media at the University of Miami, hosted a “Stand Up and Take Action” event to fight global poverty. The free event featured live music, art, dance, and guest speakers.

Student organizers teamed up with local activists from the ONE organization to cosponsor the event. “ONE is a grassroots campaign and advocacy organization backed by more than 2 million people who are committed to the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa,” ONE states on its website.

From  Oct. 16 to Oct. 18, thousands of similar “Stand Up and Take Action” events will be held around the world as ONE spreads its “Stand Up, Take Action, End Poverty Now” campaign.

“The Stand Up and Take Action event is a fun way of showing other people how to get involved and take action,” Jacqueline Villavicencio, a student organizer, said.
