Here’s something you might not think about every day: how environmentally and socially responsible is the company that mined the metal for your class ring? Global mining practices can displace indigenous communities, contaminate drinking water, harm workers, and lead to environmental destruction. Student activists with the University of Texas-Austin’s “No Dirty Gold” campaign were successful in getting the company that produces the school's class rings to support Oxfam’s “No Dirty Gold” effort. The campaign pressures jewelry retailers to pressure gold mining companies to track where—and under what conditions—their gold was mined.
