After weeks of partisan jockeying on the Hill President Obama signed the $787 billion economic stimulus into effect Tuesday. Education spending includes $15.6 billion for Pell grants, which means each individual grant will go up by $500. Upwards of $30 billion will be invested in repairing and modernizing the national electrical grid as to reduce waste and $17.7 billion will go towards public transit and light rail systems. Obama and his supporters are marking this as a major victory toward repairing the economy. "Just as President Kennedy sparked an explosion of innovation when he set America's sights on the moon, I hope this investment will ignite our imagination once more, spurring new discoveries and breakthroughs that will make our economy stronger, our nation more secure, and our planet safer for our children," Obama said. Republicans are skeptical about the ability of the bill to make good on its promises. "The transparency and bipartisanship that President Obama promised the American people was sacrificed to pass a pork-laden bill without any public review or meaningful Republican support," said chairman of the GOP Michael Steele.
