Panel Sparks Protest
Date: 11/17/2008 05:28 pm
At Columbia University, a panel discussion about allegations of the harvest of organs from Falun Gong practitioners in China sparked protest from members of the Columbia University Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CUCSSA), who claim the spiritual movement is a cult and the government of China would not do such a thing. A free-speech crisis ensued, but a negotiated settlement allowed the panel to continue with CUCSSA students in the audience sitting silently with signs. Falun Gong is outlawed in China, and several groups, including Amnesty International, have alleged China of human rights abuses in regards to Falun Gong adherents.
