Yesterday’s primaries in Washington D.C, Virginia, and Maryland markedly changed the direction of the presidential race as Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain took decisive leads in their respective parties. Student voters made an impressive impact at the polls, turning out in huge numbers across the Potomac and even braving treacherous weather conditions in some areas. In Maryland, student voter turnout increased by 13 percent from the 2004, with the overwhelming majority of student votes going to Obama. Yet in Virginia students were more divided between the Democratic candidates and said they plan to keep a close eye on the race in upcoming months.
