Privacy and Safety Potentially at Odds

On Monday the Federal Education Department proposed new regulations to outline when universities may release confidential student information. The proposed regulations were prompted by concerns, following recent campus shootings, that schools were failing to intercede with troubled students before they became a danger to themselves and others. Although the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act has always stipulated that schools may release private information in the event of an emergency, many college officials have been fearful of violating federal privacy law. The new regulations were put out to reassure college officials that they will not be penalized for reporting concerns about mentally ill students.
