Last week California, Arizona and Florida all passed ballot measures banning gay marriage. The vote is especially controversial in California where gay marriage had previously been legalized. Homosexual couples married in California before the ban are unsure of how proposition 8 will affect their legal status. The Connecticut Supreme Court recently ruled that to allow civil unions but not marriage was a violation of equal protection and therefore gay marriage became legal. Massachusetts and Connecticut are the only states in the union issuing marriage licenses to gay couples. Activists for gay marriage are voicing their concern and displeasure all across the country. In Chicago and at California State University at Humboldt these opinions took the form of protest.
