California State University, Fresno students protested the presence of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency at an on-campus Federal Government Fair. The protesters assert that the ICE unfairly targets Latino and Mexican neighborhoods and pose a burden on the families living there. “They just go to neighborhoods where they know there [are] more working class people,” said protestor Walter Ramirez. “They are discriminating.” Ramirez also said that the protestor’s ultimate goal was to prevent the ICE from recruiting students in the future. ICE’s mission statement on the Homeland Security’s Website states that the organization aims to “protect national security and uphold public safety by targeting criminal networks and terrorist organizations that seek to exploit vulnerabilities in our immigration system, in our financial networks, along our border, at federal facilities and elsewhere in order to do harm to the United States.” Protester Martin Cuevas commented that many illegal immigrants are here to work and just want a chance.
