Protestors See Democacy, Others See Disrespect

“This is what democracy looks like!” The chant echoed through megaphones as students at New York University occupied the dining area of Kimmel Hall during a 40-hour protest. Yet NYU administrators, some students and the staff of the student newspaper don’t agree with the protestors’ picture of democracy in action. The protest led by Take Back NYU (TBNYU), called for increased financial aid, fiscal transparency, and aid to Palestinian students and claimed to represent the demands of all 50,000 NYU students. The editorial board of NYU’s student newspaper, the Washington Square News, wrote that many of TBNYU’s demands were legitimate, though their actions were disrespectful. The board also disagreed with TBNYU’s claim to be speaking on behalf of the 50,000 individuals of NYU’s student body. “We at WSN are among the many who feel that through their failure to organize effectively, TBNYU has delegitimized the power of the student voice while making a mockery of the very democratic ideals that they claim to defend.” Members of TBNYU, counter that students should refrain from “nitpicking” over tactics and focus on the true issue at hand: the need for reform.

The protest ended with the suspension of 18 protesters, now dubbed the “Kimmel 18.” According to a statement from NYU, the protesters abandoned their own stated principles of non-violence by breaking a lock to gain access to the cafeteria’s balcony, and injuring a security guard. “These actions dishonor NYU’s commitment to free exchange of ideas, reasoned debate, and legitimate forms of protest,” the statement said. Some, however, believe that the students’ suspension goes against these very ideals. Over 200 faculty who share TBNYU’s hopes for increased fiscal transparency and open labor policies at the school signed a petition in support of the TBNYU protesters. The petition calls for the suspended students to remain in classes and student housing until after their hearings with the school’s disciplinary board.
