PSU Model UN Promotes Health Care and Poverty Action

Date: 10/19/2009 8:39 pm

The Portland State Model UN (PSUMUN), a two-year old group that simulates the United Nations, is working locally to promote single-payer health care end world poverty by 2015. The goals are part of the UN’s Millennium Development Goals.

PSUMUN fosters awareness and promotes action from students by bringing global issues to a local and accessible stadium.

The group is fighting global poverty by organizing a “Stand Up and Take Action” event on October 17th. The event—created as a part of a large campaign by the ONE organization—will help MUN reach the UN’s millennium goals of eradicating poverty by 2015.

On October 4th the group also brought Ralph Nader to campus to speak in favor of a single-payer healthcare system.

Nader cited the UN’s Declaration of Universal Human Rights in his advocacy for healthcare reform, which reads, “Everyone has the right to a standard living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food… medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, [or] disability.”
