Race Debate Increases

A fake advertisement featuring a stereotypically dressed African American man in a campus humor magazine at Brandeis University has sparked debate between students. Campus media has been plagued by allegations of racist speech. Speaking directly to Cinco de Mayo and Martin Luther King Day events, students attending a diversity conference at Ohio State University discussed themed parties at the school. Many feel that themed parties (such as “South of the Border” or “dress as your favorite African American”) are not simple imitation, but mockery in the tradition of the American minstrel show.
