Brown students and over a hundred Rhode Island residents gathered together in Rhode Island's State House rotunda in support of a same sex marriage bill that is currently in the state legislature. The bill would remove gender-specific provisions from the language regarding marriages in the state. The annual event, dubbed the Open Your Heart Equality rally, is sponsored by Marriage Equality Rhode Island. One of the students, Daniel Valmas, a member of the Queer Political Action Committee, publicized the event over Facebook with the intention of getting students more involved in politics. Valmas said his goal was to “let the legislature know the importance of the issue and to give students a venue for their voices to be heard.”
