Reed College, known for its liberal politics and eclectic mix of students, has decided to deny admission to students that need large amounts of financial aid. With an economic slump reducing the amount that many students can afford and a shrinking endowment, the number of students that required financial aid exceeded the amount that Reed is able to offer for the coming year. This year, there was a 23 percent increase in freshmen seeking financial aid, and twice as many students have appealed their aid packages. The admissions team will substitute 100 qualified but needy applicants with applicants that are able to pay full tuition.
