California’s colleges and universities recently approved plans to increase student fees (known in most states as tuition). This is the 7th time in 7 years that the UC and Cal State University systems’ regents have voted to raise fees (luckily for students, in 2006 the approved 8% increase was rescinded after the state stepped in with more funding). The boards defended their decision as a necessity, given Governor Schwarzenegger’s proposed $200 million cut to higher education funding, but students are not pleased. At the UC board meeting, held at UCLA, the University of California Student Association organized protests to make the voices of students heard. After the UC board made its decision to raise fees, student protesters increasingly interrupted the meeting resulting in 16 student arrests. The board meeting at Cal State Long Beach, by contrast, ran smoothly with no student protests or interruptions.
