Report Details Changes to Campus Safety after Virginia Tech
A new report written by the Midwestern Higher Education
Compact investigates changes made by campuses to improve campus safety after
the Virginia Tech tragedy last April.
The authors surveyed campuses across the country to learn what changes
campuses did and did not make. A high
majority of campuses conducted thorough safety policies reviews and the most
common change was to adopt text messaging alert systems. A smaller number of campuses, about a quarter
who responded, changed their policies falling under the Family Educational
Rights and Privacy Act. While many
campuses considered installing metal detectors and surveillance systems and
asking college applicants about any mental health history, very few adopted
such measures.
