While
much of the country has put the devastation of New Orleans behind them, students from all
over the country traveled there during winter break to help with reconstruction
efforts. Twenty-two students and faculty members from Union College
spent a week there in early December. Eighteen students from Syracuse University
traveled there earlier this month. Echoing a refrain we read over and over,
students say the hardest part is getting on the plane home knowing there’s
still so much to be done. In related news, the University of Connecticut
is one of nine schools to have won the Katrina Compassion Award; they’re also
one of 141 schools on the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor
Roll. UConn’s student groups raised $75,000 for relief efforts and travel to
communities affected by Katrina.
