RIAA Fast & Furious

Date: 11/17/2008 05:28 pm

In a conciliatory move (after a fast and furious legal smackdown), the Recording Industry Association of America is offering settlements to students and faculty facing copyright infringement lawsuits in the coming months. The settlements will allow affected individuals to settle with the RIAA at a “discounted rate,” avoiding the court costs of a lawsuit. Penalties for copyright infringement range from $750 to $250,000 per song, according to the 400 letters sent to 13 different Universities so far. The Michigan Daily reports on University of Michigan students affected by the RIAA's threat of a lawsuit. Syracuse also reports on RIAA lawsuit threats, currently affecting 37 SU students.
