Salaries of University Officials Come Under Scrutiny

As legislators are cutting education budgets and tough economic times make it harder for students to afford tuition and fee hikes, some reporters are starting to scrutinize the salaries of top university officials. In multiple states, they are finding that top coaches and administrators are receiving surprising salaries and bonuses.
The Patriot News went to the state Supreme Court to get public Pennsylvania universities to reveal salary and other financial information, which Universities are now required to turn over by May 30. The newspaper reported that in 2007-08 football coaches Joe Paterno (Penn State) earned $1,037,332, and basketball coach Ed DeChellis earned $642,366. University of Pittsburgh football coach Dave Wannstedt earned $924,331 and basketball coach Jamie Dixon earned $937,600. Temple University's football coach Al Golden earned $505,000 and basketball coach Francis Dunphy earned $661,250. The universities also have to reveal the salaries of their 25 highest paid employees in addition to other information on IRS 990 forms.
In a similar situation, the Faculty Senate criticized George Mason University President Alan Merten, who currently makes $404,000 annually, when they discovered Merten was set to receive a $108,000 bonus in addition to the $21,000, or 5.2 percent, salary increase mandated by his contract. In November, the Senate filed a motion to request Merten return the bonus, but despite no comment from Merten rumors have circulated that he converted the bonus into anonymous scholarships.
Yet, Pennsylvania’s state related institutions and George Mason may not be indicative of a nationwide trend. Some university executives are giving up raises and taking pay cuts to ease the financial burden for their students. Kent State University President Lestern Lefton and 10 of his cabinet members announced Thursday they are giving up their yearly raises in favor of scholarships and raising money for the school's campaign fund. President Lois Margaret of Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy in Portage County's Rootstown gave up a month's salary of $26,333 in December and gave her 3 percent raise worth $9,600 to her executive team in May 2008.
As state budget cuts are hitting California particularly hard, University of California President Mark G. Yudok announced Thursday he will take a 5 percent reduction in his salary next month along with all UC chancellors and other top executives. The pay cuts will free up less than $1 million, but Yudof's letter comes about a week after state senators cited recent pay hikes for UC executives as one of the reasons to take away the university system's immunity from legislative control.
