Students at Santa Ana College collected $4,500 through fundraising to save an intermediate algebra course that was eliminated due to budget cuts. About a dozen students held a campus-wide fundraiser through activities and food sales to fund the costs of the course after the Rancho Santiago Community College District canceled 25 percent of summer classes and was contemplating cutting summer school completely. Students collaborated with leaders of the Associated Student Government to create the Summer Session Rescue Fund Campaign and used social networking sites to inform students about events. Although the campaign came in $700 short, the Santa Ana College Foundation chipped in the difference to restore the math class to the summer schedule. Several students could not transfer or graduate without the course. Student organizers said they plan to continue fundraising efforts next year to put funds toward winter and summer classes.
