Senate Bill Would Require Universities to Spend Endowment to Lower Tuition Costs

The U.S Senate is considering a bill that would require universities to spend at least 5 percent of their endowments each year. Most non-profit organizations are already required to spend 5 percent of their endowments, yet universities are currently exempt from this requirement. The bill, proposed by Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) intends to make college more affordable for students by forcing universities to cover tuition costs using endowment money. However, some universities are concerned about the mandatory spending.
