The University of Montana Kaimin's
"Bess Sex Column" is causing a stir on campus after a law professor’s
attempts to get the university to cease its publication. UM law professor
Kristin Juras wants the Kaimin, a student newspaper, to stop printing the
column, written by student Bess Davis, and has threatened to take the issue to
state higher education officials.
Professor Juras argues that the school can exercise editorial control
because the Kaimin is “funded by taxpayer dollars and tuition fees for an
educational purpose, and they have to stay within that purpose.” Davis and Kaimin editor, Bill Oman counter
that Juras’s request would constitute an infringement on free speech and that
the Kaimin’s primary mission is journalism, not education. UM President George
Dennison said he doesn't want to get involved in censorship, but that the
controversy is more about a "discussion of taste and judgment."
