Sorority Reacts to Discrimination Claims
North Carolina State University’s Delta Zeta chapter supports the Delta Zeta Nationals’ decision to request that 23 of the DePauw University chapter’s members accept alumnae status, according to their chapter president. According to The New York Times, the group of women asked to retire was comprised of ethnic minorities and overweight members; some believe a DePauw University psychology professor’s survey finding the sorority chapter informally labeled the “socially awkward” sorority may have contributed to the purge. DZ Nationals have said their decisions about who was to leave were based on commitment to recruitment. DePauw’s administration has found this version of events to be irreconcilable with their findings, and has severed its ties with the sorority. NC State’s DZ’s believe the Nationals’ version.
