About 100 college students from across South Carolina rallied at the state's Capitol Tuesday to lobby against Gov. Mark Sanford's proposed tuition cap and against higher education budget cuts in the General Assembly. Gov. Sanford argues that a tuition cap would force colleges to be more efficient and affordable, but the idea isn’t being received well in the General Assembly. Callie Boyd, student body president at Clemson, said a tuition cap, coupled with budget cuts, would "cripple any university" because revenue would be cut on two fronts. "Our goal is to let the General Assembly know that students from across the state oppose the imposition of a tuition cap and that we want higher education to be funded at an appropriate level," said Boyd. "We are the ones impacted most by the decision the General Assembly makes on higher education. We must have our voices heard." In addition to rallying, the students met with a number of legislators and Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer to advocate their position.
