Pepperdine University hosted a speed-reading contest as part of its Homecoming celebrations. The competition was held to benefit First Books, a non-profit dedicated to distributing books to low-income children. Junior Sara Ashmore, who hopes the event will raise awareness of the organization, organized the event. Last year’s speed-reading contest raised enough to buy about 200 books; participants hope to exceed last year’s total.
