Strike looms on California Campuses

Date: 11/17/2008 05:28 pm

Hospital and service employees of the University of California
system voted this weekend to authorize a strike beginning
next week if the UC does not agree to increase wages. The workers, who number
close to 20,000 and are represented by the American
Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) union, have been
negotiating with the UC for the past 10 months.
In response, the UC filed for a temporary restraining order with the Public
Employment Relations Board forbidding AFSCME from
striking, claiming the strike would endanger public health and safety.
