At Emory University, the Student Government Association passed a resolution to create an optional "green fee". The $10 green fee will be added to student’s tuition statements and will help support “renewable energy investment on campus ... [and] student-driven projects and service that reduce environmental impact,” said Ryan Jones, bill author and SGA representative at large. A survey of 1,961 students found that 34.4 percent supported the creation of a green fee, 37.1 percent supported a green fee if it were optional, and 28.6 percent of students surveyed were opposed to its creation at all. If half of the student population at Emory chooses to pay the green fee, the fee will raise over $60,000. The resolution stipulates that the money must go towards projects not already in effect at Emory; fee-supported projects “must go above and beyond what the University already does,” said Jones. A newly created green fee committee will choose projects and allocate the funds.
