Student Lobbies for Breastfeeding Breaks

A graduate student at the University of New Mexico lobbied the state government for a bill, passed earlier this month, requiring employers “to provide a private, clean space for breastfeeding mothers to pump their milk.” The campus initiative in support of the bill came out of a Graduate and Professional Students Association resolution for a breast-feeding support program on campus, which was sent to the school’s Board of Regents. Students felt the reaction was too slow, and changed tacks.
