In response to a recent motion by Georgetown’s largest student newspaper, The Hoya, to achieve financial and editorial independence, the university has applied to trademark the Hoya’s masthead, preventing the paper from using the Hoya name. Georgetown’s administration maintains that they have no opposition to an independent newspaper, but that they plan to keep control over “The Hoya” name. The newspaper’s staff are pushing for independence because they object to university editorial censorship and think accepting funding from the school presents a conflict of interest.
