Student Perspectives On the War in Iraq

Date: 11/17/2008 05:28 pm

Sgt. Richard Nye, a political science major at Pepperdine University, has taken the time to answer a reporter's questions (by email) from his post in Iraq. Nye has been overseas in Iraq since October 2006, and his views about the war have changed since then. While he still believes the war can and must be won, Nye also believes that the media has propagated some misunderstandings and that politicians—regardless of their party—tend to gloss over the human cost of the numbers. The Lantern, Ohio State University’s paper, also carries coverage of the war from student soldiers’ perspectives this week. Specialist Nick Barlow and Lance Cpl. Aaron Cohen served in Iraq in 2004 and 2005, respectively. From the University of Michigan comes an article about two students with roots in Iraq. The two helped to organize an event last semester that raised funds for the Palestine Children's Relief Fund, an organization that has paid for several Iraqi children to come to the U.S. for medical treatment.
