Student Speak Out on Staffing Decisions
Students are paying close attention to, and weighing in on, administrative hiring decisions—especially in cases where beloved faculty or staff have their contracts terminated. Visual arts students at Rutgers University are using petitions, Facebook pages, and websites to protest the demotion of a video media professor. Students at Kansas State University have started a petition to support an investigation into the reassignment of the former International Student Center director, whom they say was given no reason for her dismissal. Students at the University of Oregon have organized a “Save Sepulveda” campaign in response to the news that Spanish instructor Jesus Sepulveda would not be retained by the school. An article from UMass Boston investigates allegations that a professor was removed from his position in retaliation for speaking out against the school’s administration.
