Student Jonathan Lopez is suing the Los Angeles City Community College system for religious discrimination after his public speaking professor, John Matteson, purportedly stopped his speech against gay marriage. Lopez’s framed his argument against gay marriage in the context of his Christian faith. Lopez claims Matteson also called him a “fascist bastard” and that instead of a grade for the speech wrote “ask god for your grade” on his evaluation form. The Alliance Defense Fund, a Christian legal organization, is representing Lopez. Alliance counsel David Hacker believes Lopez has an excellent case because no topic was given for the speech. "He was expressing his faith during an open-ended assignment, but when the professor disagreed with some minor things he mentioned, the professor shut him down," Hacker said. "Basically, colleges and universities should give Christian students the same rights to free expression as other students."
